Interior Customizations

If you have purchased the Professional or Custom levels of service you may customize elements of your book’s layout in order to personalize your book and achieve a unique look and feel for your work. Basic templates have default settings for these elements.

Below are the items that are customizable.

Header/Footers

You can choose to place your running headers at the top or bottom of the page, and you can decide how to orient them as well (gutter, centered or outside). Below are some examples of running headers and running footers.

Folios

Similar to running headers and footers, you may choose where to place your folios (page numbers) and how to orient those as well. Your choices are the same as with the headers (top or bottom, guttter, centered, or outside). Below are some examples of folios.

Folios – Bottom, Outside

Chapter Drop

Chapter starts are traditionally an area where a book’s unique style can be displayed. Xlibris has a variety of options to help you customize the chapter titles of your book.

Paragraph Indent

You can decide how far across you would like the indentation of the first paragraph of a chapter. Your options are: none, standard, or 1/2 page. Below are some examples of first paragraph indentation.

Drop/Raise Caps

Another stylistic flourish that may (or may not) add to the format of your book is to add a drop or raise cap. Xlibris allows both options.
Below are some examples of drop/raise caps.

Capitalization of first 3 words of each chapter

Sometimes the first few words of a new chapter are capitalized for effect. This is another technique that may or may not add to your particular book, but Xlibris can support this if you desire. Xlibris will capitalize the first three words of a new chapter; below is an example of capitalization.

Brackets

When certain elements such as running heads and folios are placed together on the page it may be necessary to separate them with a decorative bracket. If you have placed these items adjacent to each other and would like to separate them, here are some brackets you may use to do so. (Custom level service will allow you to substitute any character for the bracket if you have a particular separator in mind.)
