Amanda Carmichael, age seventy-four and recently widowed, has offered her home as a safe house for battered women and children until space is available in the Oak Haven Shelter. This impulsive action turns the harmony of her orderly life into chaos. The story focuses on the fragile bond of friendship between Amanda and Ann Marie, one of the abused children. Amanda risks her own life to protect the mother and children from attack by the enraged husband. Within a few months she is transformed from a conservative, proper lady to a radical community activist determined to change the status quo.
