Author Biography
Leon Cooper has been intrigued, even captivated, by the study of ‘water’ since earliest memories of drawing water from a well and drinking water directly from a windmill. He learned to swim in a canyon pond that had been outlaw Billy the Kid’s favorite hide out prior to his demise. Christopher Columbus could have not been more excited about crossing the Atlantic than Mr. Cooper’s fascination with the study of water. Leon Cooper was born on the high plains of Eastern New Mexico at the onset of the Great Depression. Technically speaking, neither of his parents was born in the United States. His father was born in the Indian Territory that later became Oklahoma, and his mother in the New Mexico Territory, four months after her family arrived from the Cherokee Nation five years prior to statehood. Growing up in simple, rural surroundings where people survived by being creative, there was never a dull moment. The word “bored” was unknown, having been displaced by “happy” and “fun”. The word “poor” was not understood, because everyone was “rich” in friendships and experiences. Sundays were dedicated to families, neighbors and genuine enjoyment, for the other six days of the week, from daylight until after dark, were spent in earning a living. Music was an important aspect of every family, for everyone sang and/or played a musical instrument of some kind. Basic sports were also important. Families and friends played all sorts of mixed games, softball and the like. Many girls were as able and as skilled as the boys. School was a fun and rewarding experience one didn’t want to miss. Curiosity was one of his major traits. If things weren’t logical or supported by direct evidence, young Mr. Cooper wouldn’t believe them. His curiosity led to adversity one day when, at age 11, he made a near tragic mistake by staring at a solar eclipse without the use of filters – against the strictest instructions of his parents. This resulted in a period during which he was blind, followed by a couple of years of slow recovery. By some miracle, he recovered about 90% of his visual acuity. It was during this blind period that he learned to play the piano – by Braille – and, later, the accordion and organ. Mr. Cooper graduated from the SNU (Oklahoma) at age 20, taught sciences in the upper grades for a couple of years before specializing in physics and chemistry. He returned to the universities, acquired other degrees, and taught at high school and college levels (UNM and NMTech). He worked in the physics division at Los Alamos National Laboratory for several years, and at the LANL Geothermal Energy site in Guatemala where he designed the world’s first geothermal food dehydration plant (Zunil, Guatemala). For a dozen years, he owned and directed Energy Associates International, an engineering and consulting firm that carried out more than a hundred, energy-related projects scattered across 14 Latin American and Caribbean countries. The majority of these projects involved development of indigenous energy sources for replacing costly, imported fossil fuels for agricultural applications. At Los Alamos National Laboratory, Mr. Cooper had the occasional privilege of working one on one with noteworthy people of history, including Edward Teller, the recognized father of the Hydrogen Bomb. Along the line, Mr. Cooper found time to obtain his pilot’s license and accumulate 4,000 hours flight time, to take his young family on adventure trips all over the western U.S., Canada and Mexico, to ascend the highest mountain peaks and to float the longest rivers in New Mexico. He developed several original processes including the rapid mass propagation system for pine tree seedlings, and the accelerated growth system for greenhouse plants utilizing photoperiod stimulation and carbon dioxide enrichment of the atmosphere. His favorite classroom is the universe, for every day brings other opportunities to learn. Mr. Cooper recognizes the importance of formal education, having spent more than 10 years in university study, and having been an educator for most of his life. But, he also recognizes that real learning isn’t confined within the four walls of a classroom, but that it extends to the outer limits of the universe. Most importantly, it consists of making real, two-way connections between one’s head and his or her hands. Among his favorite statements are: · “For every problem there is a solution.” · “Technical concepts aren’t technical.” [They are based on simple, easy-to-understand principles.] · “How did all this magnificent, unwavering, super-intelligent design of matter, energy, space and time come about?” [Think about it!] · “You can’t get ‘something’ for ‘nothing’.“ [Everything has a price.] · “Someone is looking to you as an example.” [Don’t be a fool.] · “There are ‘givers’ and there are ‘takers’.” [Which are you?] · “There are ‘doers’ and there are ‘watchers’.” [Which are you”] · “Time waits for no one.” [Grab it!] · “Be good to the earth.” [The earth has been good to you!]
