About the Author

John R. Farley was a camper and member of staff at Camp Read in the 1940s and 1950s.  As a teenager during WWII, he and a few other youth leaders served as camp leaders because the adults had gone off to war.  This experience gained Farley the reputation as leader of the Camp Read “old guard.”  He played a key role in the transition of the camp from its Long Pond years to its new and present location in the Adirondacks, at Brant Lake.  He has remained active in scounting over the last sixty years, during his military career and later in advertising and public relations work.  He has dedicated the past five years to steering writers, nudging researchers, motivating photo specialists, and inspiring editors through the demanding task of producing a comprehensive history.  The book will stand the test of time and be a continuing tribute to the camp that has inspired so many young people to careers in scouting, education, medicine, the military, government service, the law, and many social service agencies.
