Urban Affairs Association – 39th Annual Meeting

March 4-7, 2009
Renaissance Chicago Hotel, Chicago, IL

ABE is going to have a combined exhibit at UAA, acting as a featured go-between for association book-buying delegates and the publishers who participate in this exhibit each year. This year’s theme: “Contesting and Sustaining the City: Neighborhood, Region, or World.”

UAA is an impressive group of professionals from public and private universities involved in teaching, research and public service. Because UAA members offer technical advice to universities and urban institutes regarding organizational and program development, the latest books and periodicals addressing these areas are a prime concern.

If you want to get your published texts, reference, resource materials, and journals pertaining to urban affairs into major colleges and universities, this is the place to exhibit.

National Black Book Festival

May 16-17, 2009
George R. Brown Convention Center, Houston, TX

The 2nd annual National Black Book Festival is a cooperative effort between Cushcity.com, one of the leading websites promoting African-American literature, and Houston Black Expo, the largest African-American trade show in the state of Texas.

2009 London Book Festival

January 21, 2010
LONDON (November 5, 2009)

The 2009 London Book Festival will hold its annual awards honoring the best of international publishing on January 21, 2010. The awards will be held at Grosvenor House, near the famed Mayfair literary district in the heart of the city.

The 2009 London Book Festival will consider entries in general non-fiction, fiction, biography/autobiography, children’s books, cookbooks, compilations/anthologies; e-books; genre-based, how-to, photography/art, spiritual, music, teenage/young adult, unpublished stories and the wild card (anything goes!) categories published on or after Jan. 1, 2005. All entries must be in English and can be published, self-published or issued by an independent publishing house.

Our grand prize for the 2009 London Book Festival is $1500 cash and a flight to London for our gala awards ceremony.

Submitted works will be judged by a panel of publishing industry experts using the following criteria:

1) General excellence and the author's passion for telling a good story.
2) The potential of the work to gain a wider audience in the worldwide market.

    2008 DIY Book Festival

The 2008 DIY Book Festival has issued a call for entries for its seventh annual program celebrating the success of independent authors and publishers.

The DIY Book Festival will consider self-published or independent publisher non-fiction, fiction, biography/autobiography, children's books, teenage, how-to, cookbooks, science fiction, audio/spoken word, photography, art, comics, 'zines, fan fiction, poetry and e-books published on or after Jan. 1, 2006. All entries must be in English and have been self-published or issued by an independent publishing house.

Please note that print-on-demand (POD) authors with iUniverse, PublishAmerica, Infinity Publishing and other outlets are eligible for the competition.

Our grand prize for the 2008 DIYBF Book of the Year is $1500 cash and a flight to the awards ceremony, held in February 2009 as part of the annual DIY Convention in Los Angeles.

Genre category winners will receive a combination of books, software and other prizes.

Submitted works will be judged by a panel of industry experts using the following criteria:
1) General excellence and the author's passion for telling a good story.
2) The unique use of guerilla marketing tactics to reach a wider audience. This includes innovative marketing, merchandising, publicity tactics and other innovative methods of reaching an independent audience.
